Food forests: Their services and sustainability

Industrialized food systems use unsustainable practices leading to climate change, natural resource depletion, economic disparities across the value chain, and detrimental impacts on public health. In contrast, alternative solutions such as forests have potential provide healthy food, sufficient livelihoods, environmental services, spaces for recreation, education, community building. This study compiles evidence from more than 200 worldwide, with detailed insights 14 exemplary in Europe, North America, South gained through site visits interviews. We present illustrate main services that assess their sustainability. The findings indicate majority of perform well social-cultural criteria by building capacity, providing enhancing biodiversity, regenerating soil, among others. However, broader impact, need go beyond provision enhance viability. There is a specific trainings other measures targeting this deficit. appraises current state provides an orientation entrepreneurs, officials, activists better understand forests’ advancing sustainable systems.
